Our mission is to protect the Diamondback Terrapin species on Long Beach Island, New Jersey and the surrounding area. The Terrapin population has declined drastically in the past two dozen years due to many factors such as:
Predators such as crows, racoons, etc, raid their nests in order to eat the eggs
Houses and roads have taken over their nesting spots
Humans have taken these animals from their natural habitats to either keep them as pets, use them as food, or to supply the illegal pet trade in the US and overseas.
The Terrapin Nesting Project is working to rebuild the population of the Diamondback Terrapin and restore the balance of the ecosystem.
